Tips for planning an RV road trip from New Mexico to New York

Are you planning an RV road trip from New Mexico to New York? Great! Are you going on a trip with your family? Even better. There are a lot of family-friendly cities in New York that you will most likely enjoy. However, before you go on your journey, there are some tips you need to keep in mind. They serve the purpose of not losing your mind while on the trip. So, let’s see what these tips are.

The first thing when planning an RV road trip from New Mexico to New York is…

… To choose the right type of vehicle you need. So, an RV is a great vehicle on its own. You can sleep in it, prepare food, go to the bathroom, and have a home experience on the road. Great, right? However, you need to keep your vehicle safe and protected if you want to be able to use it. That is why you should opt for a reliable storage solution. But, we will mention more later on.

The right type of RV for you should be the one where you can have an adventure, but don’t spend a fortune on the upkeep costs. Furthermore, you need to stock up groceries, right? A 16-foot Class B van won’t do the job. On the other hand, a 40-foot Class A RV is too big and too costly. Try to balance everything out so that you can maximize your experience.

Don’t forget to budget properly.

Budgeting is important when planning an RV road trip

It’s very important to know your budget when you plan a road trip. Things you need to take into account include:

  • Gas
  • Campground fees
  • Food
  • Water
  • Other costs

Once you planned out your budget, it’s good to maybe check out other destinations along your route. Maybe you can even go a little bit further. Since you are going to New York, maybe you can visit some of the small towns in New Hampshire that New Yorkers simply love. Who knows, maybe you will start to love some of them too!

Book campsites in advance and plan an RV-friendly route

Even though it is appealing that you just hit the road and let the wind blow you in a random direction, it might be better to reserve a campsite. They are far safer, but they are also booked months in advance. That is why we recommend that you make the reservation, just to be safe. When doing that, look for online reviews and find the site that suits your needs in the best possible way.

Once you’ve done that, find the most RV-friendly route. More experienced folks like to explore the backroads and scenic byways. But, if you are not experienced we recommend you plan. Search for any low clearances and propane restrictions for bridges and tunnels. Also, think about refilling your gas tank. You don’t want to end up somewhere in the desert with no juice like Walt and Jesse in Breaking Bad!

Quick side note: while you do this, you can trust your RV with the people over at Santa Fe Storage and Moving. They will take good care of it and protect your motorhome. They are a great and reliable storage solution!

Last but not least

Adjust your estimated time of arrival when going on an RV road trip from New Mexico to New York. Do you want to arrive on time so that you can explore Lefferts Gardens? You will need to adjust your estimation. Traveling in an RV is not like traveling by car. Keep in mind that you need to plan an average route speed of 50 mph. With this in mind, you will have to make more frequent gas stops. Generally, driving an RV takes a lot more focus and new drivers may get tired after a shorter time behind the wheel. So, drive no more than 300 miles per day and look to arrive at your destination before 3 p.m. Good luck!

I was not looking forward to this move, and I felt pretty stressed out on a moving day, but the movers were great and did all they could to take the anxiety out. I would like to say a special thanks to Steve and his team for a wonderful job!
